Best Time to Get Married in Carmel, California (A Seasonal Wedding Guide)
Nestled along California’s breathtaking Central Coast, Carmel-by-the-Sea is one of the most romantic wedding destinations in the United States. With white sand beaches, dramatic coastal cliffs, and charming storybook architecture, it’s no surprise that couples from around the world choose Carmel for their wedding day.
But when planning a wedding on the coast, one question always comes up:
When is the best time to get married in Carmel, California?
The good news is that the climate along the Monterey Peninsula is mild year-round. Temperatures typically range between the mid-50s and mid-60s, creating comfortable conditions for outdoor ceremonies throughout the year.
However, each season offers a different atmosphere, lighting, and experience for couples planning a Carmel wedding. Here’s what to expect.
Spring Weddings in Carmel (March – May)
Spring is one of the most beautiful and underrated seasons for a Carmel wedding.
Winter rains bring vibrant green hills and fresh coastal blooms, making the landscape feel lush and alive. Beaches and scenic overlooks are quieter than in summer, giving couples a more intimate experience.
Spring weddings often feature soft coastal light, misty mornings, and dramatic ocean backdrops, especially near iconic locations like Carmel Beach.
Why couples love spring weddings in Carmel:
Lush greenery and seasonal wildflowers
Fewer tourists than summer
Beautiful soft light for photography
Cool but comfortable temperatures
Spring weather can be slightly unpredictable, but the changing skies often create incredibly romantic photos.
Summer Weddings in Carmel (June – August)
Summer is the most popular time for visitors to the Monterey Peninsula. The charming streets of Carmel-by-the-Sea are lively, restaurants are buzzing, and the coastline feels vibrant and full of life.
However, summer on the California coast often brings marine fog known locally as “June Gloom.” Morning fog can drift over the cliffs and beaches before clearing later in the afternoon.
While some couples worry about fog, it actually creates dreamy, cinematic wedding photos and soft lighting that photographers love.
Advantages of summer weddings:
Long daylight hours
Warmer coastal temperatures
Romantic fog and coastal atmosphere
Vibrant local energy and events
For the best lighting and privacy, many couples choose sunset ceremonies overlooking the ocean.
Fall Weddings in Carmel (September – November)
Many locals will tell you that fall is the best time to get married in Carmel.
The summer fog usually clears, skies are more consistently blue, and temperatures remain pleasantly warm. Early fall also brings fewer crowds while still offering beautiful weather.
Golden sunsets along the coast near Big Sur become especially stunning during this time of year.
Why fall weddings are so popular:
Clear skies and reliable weather
Warm coastal temperatures
Gorgeous golden sunset light
Less crowded beaches and viewpoints
September and October are often considered the sweet spot for Carmel weddings.
Winter Weddings in Carmel (December – February)
Winter weddings in Carmel feel intimate, peaceful, and romantic.
While winter is the rainiest season on the Central Coast, it also brings dramatic skies and powerful ocean views. Stormy waves crashing against the cliffs can create a cinematic backdrop that feels incredibly unique.
Cozy venues and fireplaces throughout town make winter weddings feel especially magical.
Benefits of winter weddings:
Fewer tourists and quieter beaches
Easier venue and hotel availability
Dramatic coastal scenery
Cozy romantic atmosphere
Couples who embrace the moody beauty of winter often end up with unforgettable photos.
