Sarah & Eli’s Carmel Elopement: A Big Sur Coastal Adventure

There are some wedding days that feel less like a wedding and more like an adventure you never want to end.

Sarah and Eli’s Carmel elopement was exactly that.

They spent their day exploring the California coast, staying at Villa Mara in Carmel, collecting abalone in Pebble Beach, exchanging vows on a cliff overlooking Big Sur, enjoying a beautiful picnic by Forage Vintage Rentals, and ending the day dancing together in the caves.

It was romantic, a little adventurous, completely personal, and so incredibly them.

And honestly, this is exactly why I love photographing elopements in Carmel and Big Sur.

Your wedding day doesn't have to be a series of traditions that you've been told you have to follow. It can be a day built entirely around the two of you and the things you actually love doing together.

A Carmel Elopement Starting at Villa Mara

Sarah and Eli made Carmel their home base for their elopement, staying at Villa Mara.

I love the idea of beginning a wedding day somewhere that feels intimate and tucked away from the rest of the world. Instead of rushing through a traditional wedding morning, an elopement gives you the freedom to wake up slowly, have coffee together, get ready, and actually enjoy being engaged before the day changes everything.

Carmel is such a beautiful place to begin a California coastal elopement.

You have the charming streets of Carmel-by-the-Sea, the beaches and dramatic coastline, and Big Sur just down the road. It gives you so many options for creating an elopement day that moves naturally between different landscapes and experiences.

For Sarah and Eli, their day was never about staying in one place.

It was about exploring.

Exploring Pebble Beach Together

Before heading south toward Big Sur, Sarah and Eli spent part of their day in Pebble Beach collecting abalone.

And this is one of the reasons I love photographing intimate weddings and elopements.

The best moments aren't always the ones that happen during the ceremony.

Sometimes it's the things that seem completely unrelated to a wedding day that become the most meaningful photographs.

Walking along the shoreline.

Getting your hands dirty.

Collecting something together.

Laughing when the wind completely ruins your hair.

Those little pieces of your relationship are what make your wedding photographs feel personal.

I don't want your gallery to look like every other elopement gallery on Pinterest.

I want it to look like your relationship.

A Big Sur Cliffside Elopement Ceremony

From Pebble Beach, we made our way down the coast toward Big Sur.

There are few places in California that feel quite like Big Sur.

The mountains drop dramatically into the Pacific. The coastline seems endless. Fog rolls through the cliffs and trees, and the entire landscape feels a little bit otherworldly.

It's one of my favorite places for a Big Sur elopement.

Sarah and Eli exchanged their vows on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, surrounded by one of the most beautiful landscapes California has to offer.

And while the scenery was incredible, what I remember most was how intimate the moment felt.

There wasn't a huge crowd.

There wasn't a complicated production.

There was just Sarah and Eli, standing together on the California coast, promising to choose each other for the rest of their lives.

That is the magic of an elopement.

You get to slow down enough to actually experience it.

A Romantic Coastal Picnic by Forage Vintage Rentals

After the ceremony, Sarah and Eli settled into a beautiful picnic created by Forage Vintage Rentals.

One of my favorite things about planning a California elopement is creating experiences throughout the day instead of trying to squeeze everything into a few hours.

A picnic gives you permission to stop.

To sit together.

To eat.

To open something delicious.

To talk about the ceremony you just had and take a breath before heading off on the next adventure.

And when your picnic happens along the Big Sur coastline, it doesn't hurt that the backdrop is pretty spectacular.

For couples planning a Carmel or Big Sur elopement, I always encourage you to think beyond the ceremony itself.

What would you actually want to do together?

Would you picnic on the beach?

Go for a hike?

Explore tide pools?

Have champagne somewhere beautiful?

Bring your dog?

Rent a vintage car?

Whatever makes the day feel like the two of you — that's what belongs on your wedding day.

Dancing in the Caves Along the Big Sur Coast

And then came one of my favorite parts of the entire day.

The caves.

After everything else they had experienced, Sarah and Eli ended up dancing together in the caves along the coast.

Because why not?

This is exactly the kind of thing I want couples to feel free to do on their elopement day.

You don't have to spend your wedding day standing perfectly still.

You don't have to worry about keeping your dress pristine.

You don't have to follow a timeline just because that's how weddings are usually done.

You can explore.

You can climb.

You can dance.

You can get your feet wet.

You can laugh until your stomach hurts.

You can disappear into a cave with your new husband or wife and dance like nobody is watching.

Those are the photographs that make me happiest.

Not because they're perfect, but because they're real.

Planning a Carmel or Big Sur Elopement?

If you're dreaming about a Carmel elopement, I hope Sarah and Eli's day gives you permission to think outside the traditional wedding box.

Your elopement can be a full-day adventure.

You can start your morning in Carmel, explore Pebble Beach, drive Highway 1 into Big Sur, exchange vows on the cliffs, stop for a picnic, explore the coastline, and end the evening somewhere completely unexpected.

And it doesn't have to look exactly like this.

That's the point.

Maybe your perfect day involves hiking to a waterfall.

Maybe it's renting a vintage car and driving Highway 1.

Maybe it's having oysters by the ocean.

Maybe it's bringing your closest people along.

Maybe it's just the two of you and a bottle of champagne.

There is no right way to elope.

There is only the way that feels right for you.

Why Carmel and Big Sur Are Perfect for an Elopement

Carmel and Big Sur are especially beautiful for couples who want their wedding day to feel like an experience rather than a traditional event.

You can combine:

  • Dramatic coastal views along Big Sur

  • Beautiful beaches and tide pools around Carmel and Pebble Beach

  • Intimate accommodations for a slower wedding morning

  • Scenic drives along Highway 1

  • Hiking and exploring for adventurous couples

  • Romantic picnic setups overlooking the ocean

  • Golden-hour portraits along the California coast

  • A private, meaningful ceremony surrounded by nature

The best part?

You don't have to choose just one.

Your Carmel elopement can unfold throughout the entire day, moving from one place and experience to the next.

Your Big Sur Elopement Photographer

If you're planning a Big Sur or Carmel elopement, I'm not here to turn your day into a photoshoot.

I'm here to photograph the day you're actually having.

The messy moments.

The wind.

The happy tears.

The champagne.

The terrible dancing.

The quiet moments when you're completely wrapped up in each other.

And all the little things that make your relationship yours.

I'll help you create an elopement experience that gives you beautiful photographs without spending your entire wedding day taking photographs.

Because years from now, I want you to remember more than what your wedding looked like.

I want you to remember what it felt like.

Sarah and Eli's Carmel elopement was full of adventure, ocean air, good food, laughter, beautiful scenery, and a whole lot of love.

A day that felt completely like them.

And that's always the goal.

If you're dreaming up a Carmel or Big Sur elopement of your own, I'd love to hear what you're imagining.

Let's make a day that feels like you.

SEO tip: I would make Carmel elopement the main target rather than trying to rank this individual post for “Big Sur wedding photographer.” That lets the story naturally capture both Carmel and Big Sur searches while your dedicated service/portfolio pages do the heavier work for the photographer-specific terms.
